I am joined by THE MONKEY Cinematographer – Nico Aguilar. Catch us discuss the upcoming horror comedy in theaters February 21st, 2025. Aguilar tells us about balancing elements of both comedy and horror and taking aesthetic inspiration from different time periods, building the color palette for the film based on the emotional evolution of the main characters, and working with production designer Danny Vermette and colorist Bryan.

Nico Aguilar, AMC, is a Mexican-American feature film cinematographer. He is known for his work on PEDRO PÁRAMO by Rodrigo Prieto, CHUPA by Jonás Cuarón, and now THE MONKEY by Oz Perkins. He is also known for his additional photography work on Marvel’s ECHO, Martin Scorsese’s KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, and Julie Taymor’s GLORIAS. Beyond narrative filmmaking, Nico has worked extensively in the music and commercial scene, collaborating with artists and companies such as Doechii, Chappell Roan, Apple, Oakley, and Snapchat.
Among his accolades, Nico has won the ASC Heritage Award and the International Kodak Scholarship Award.
