This past Free Comic Book Day, The Dalton School held its very own Hero Con. This annual event is a celebration of diversity, social justice and creativity.
This event was free for all students, faculty, families and friends! It featured an artist alley, cosplay contest, free comics and swag bags, a Harry Potter floor, VR, video game tournaments, archery, panel discussions, author signings, and a musical performance by the students with a tribute to the late Stan Lee!!
I was super happy to be a part of this amazing experience. I participated in my first panel alongside 6 other super talented cosplayers where we discussed our journey in cosplay, and the importance of representation and being able to cosplay who ever you want! We also got to hang with the students, judge the cosplay contest and just geek out. Seeing the smiles on the kids faces, this is what cosplay is all about. Just having fun, being a role model for the kids, and showing that everyone can be a hero!
Mission
In keeping with mission of The Dalton School, this event will promote both diversity and social justice advocacy in an inclusive, and entertaining, way.
In the world of Comic Conventions, participants are encouraged to celebrate their diverse identities in connection with a variety of sources from literature, media, pop culture, gaming, music, etc. As a result, these participants feel a strong sense of belonging to a community that is inclusive and safe. In recent years, Cons have also become a platform for activism by encouraging self-expression and conversations. Cons both embrace and inspire.

As I said at the time on Instagram it’s great seeing how the cosplaying community is giving back to the community at large. Bravo to you and your fellow cosplayers and to the students. And it’s always worth repeating…. EXCELSIOR ‼️
